Fredrik Barth

 

Fredrik Barth (b. 1928) was appointed as the first Professor of Social Anthropology in 1965 at the University of Bergen where he founded the Department of Social Anthropology. He subsequently held Chairs in Social Anthropology at the University of Oslo, Emroy University (Austin) and the University of Boston. In 2008 he was appointed Doctor Honoris Cause at the University of Bergen. Professor Barth  is a world reknown scholar who has published extensively since the late 1940s, including highly influencial theoretical contributions on a broad range of topics, based on ethnographic materials from numerous fieldworks in many different areas, including Darfur (Sudan), Kurdistan (Irak), Swat (Pakistan), Baluchistan (Afganistan), South Irak, Oman, New Guinea, Bali, Buthan and Norway.
