Farlige tegn fra gudene -en studie av haruspicene i den romerske senrepublikk

Abstract

Til tross for at romersk historie har vært grundig studert i mange år, er likevel haruspicene et presteskap som har blitt oversett i mange studier. Deres posisjon i den offentlige religion er på mange måter spesiell. Ikke bare er de opprinnelig et utenlandsk presteskap, men deres manglende tilknytning til den politiske elite er også særegent i et romersk-religiøst perspektiv. Kildematerialet forteller oss lite om detaljene rundt deres organisering, divinasjonsmetoder og rolle i den romerske divinasjon. Prosjektet har som formål å oppklare noen av de problematiske forhold knyttet til haruspicene. Haruspicene er i denne sammenheng belyst ut i fra to ulike perspektiver. Det første viser haruspicene som en egen gruppe religiøse spesialister, deres kunnskap, divinasjonsmetoder og organisering. Det andre belyser haruspicenes virke i en bredere religiøs kontekst, hvor relasjoner og strukturer knyttet til divinasjon blir nærmere analysert. Dette åpner for en mer utfyllende forståelse av haruspicene i den romerske religion.

Even though they have been somewhat neglected in the research of Roman History, the Haruspices were an integrated and important part of the Roman divination in the time of the late republic. This thesis explores the role of the Haruspices in the expiation and interpretation of prodigies in Roman religion. By studying the Haruspices from a dual perspective, where the focal point is on both their organization and skills, as well as their place in the field of divination; the Haruspices and their position in the Roman world will be more closely examined. As experts on the interpretation of intestines in sacrificial animals and bad omens such as lightning bolts, showers of stones, findings of hermaphrodites and animals with deformations, their knowledge of the will of the gods secured their position as an important part of the Roman religion. In some aspect they represent an unique feature in the Roman society. The Haruspices were originally a foreign priesthood, and they shared knowledge and skills with another priesthood, the Xviri. While the first part of the thesis explores the organisation and skills of the Haruspices, the second part analyses the Haruspices in a wider perspective. With the help of Pierre Bourdieus theoretical framework, the aim is to examine the hierarcichal structure in the field of divination and to give a better understanding of the Haruspices in Roman divination.
