This master's thesis explores opinions on the Norwegian introduction programme for newly arrived immigrants from the perspective of the participants. It is based on qualitative interviews with seven Muslim refugees in Western Norway. The thesis focuses on three main aspects of their experience of coming to Norway as refugees and participating in the programme: how they describe their own religious identity, their evaluation of the education, and how they experience integration; whether they find it easy or hard to become a part of the local community where they now live. The thesis is divided in three parts. The first part discusses the legal and political fundament for the programme. The second part presents the interviews with the informants, ordered thematically, with continuous analysis of the empirical data. In the third and final part, conclusions and reflections on the data are offered. These are then used to provide a further discussion of the Norwegian introduction programme in a national context, focusing on problems like funding, handling trauma related issues with the participants, and governmental integration strategies. In general, the informants seem to be content with the programme, but they still find it hard to become integrated in the local community as a whole. This may be due to a lack of social arenas where the refugees (and other immigrants) can meet and interact with the local, established population on equal terms.en_US
