Organising for a philosophy of internationalism and multidisciplinarity in the social sciences: the case of CROP, the comparative research programme on poverty
Abstract
Projects come and projects go in the social sciences. But there are fewinternational, multi-disciplinary, long-term research programmes whichsurvive outside an institutional framework for any length of time. This is not accidental. Universities and research institutions in thesocial sciences are not organised for the complex challenges of the realand multi-faceted world - and the real world is growing increasinglycomplex through internationalisation. In the following is described a hitherto untried model of cooperationand development of research across disciplinary and nationalboundaries, using the knowledge accumulated in disciplinary andnational studies as stepping stones into an open arena for povertyresearchers and comparative poverty studies in developed and developingcountries.
