Abstract
The Norwegian Research Council has evaluated Norwegian anthropology and concluded that the discipline is ethnographically strong, but defensive when it comes to theoretical contributions. Researchers are now actively following up the critique through a series of theory-oriented projects. It is interesting to observe that none of these initiatives refers to what I term «classical Norwegian social anthropology» – the scholarly tradition of Fredrik Barth. It seems that «theory development» is interpreted as «contemporary international debate». The article is critical of this break and suggests that there may be theoretical potentials in the Norwegian tradition that are overlooked in the attempt to «keep up with the times». In particular, I endorse the realistic position that characterizes «classical Norwegian social anthropology» and suggest that a strengthening of this position in terms of Roy Bhaskar's critical realism may contribute a theoretical alternative to contemporary anthropological orientations.
