Preferanser og smak -Publikums ønsker og Teaterets svar

Abstract

Skuspiller og publikum er det viktigste forholdet i teateret, men hvem er publikum? Hva liker de å se på? Og hvordan møter vært teater deres behov? Dette er spørsmålene jeg kommer til å prøve å svare på i denne masteroppgaven. Vi kommer til å se på forholdet mellom teater og befolkningen i Vestland med et spesielt fokus på Bergen. Først vil vi se på hva teater er i Norge; hvor det kommer fra og hva kulturpolitikken er. Videre vil vi bruke forskjellig statistisk materiale om publikum og teater fra blant annet Statistisk Sentralbyrå og Norsk Publikumsutvikling for å se hvilke mønster vi kan se gjennom dette. Det jeg har funnet er at mesteparten av teaterpublikummet i Bergen og Vestland foretrekker teater som er underholdende, gir dem noe å tenke på og er "lett" (som de kan forstå seg på og som ikke er for "høykultur"). Hvis vi tar denne informasjonen og relaterer den til det som blir produsert av teateret finner vi en god balanse mellom forestillinger som klart er laget for publikum og forestillinger som er laget for å utfordre publikum.

Actor and audience is the most important relationship in theatre. But who are our spectators? And what do they like to watch? And how does the theatre meet their demand? These are the questions I will try to clarify and answer in this thesis. We will look at the relationship between the theatre and the people based in Vestland, Norway, with a special focus on Bergen. Firstly, we will take a look at what the theatre is in Norway; where it came from, and what the cultural policy is. Then we will use different statistical material about the theatre and the spectator from Statistisk Sentralbyrå and Norsk Publikumsutvikling among others and discuss which patterns can be detected through those. What I have found is that most theatregoers in Bergen and Vestland, and the rest of Norway, do prefer theatre that is entertaining, gives them something to think about and is “light” (meaning understandable and not too high culture). If we take this information and relate it to what the theatres are producing, we get a good balance of productions clearly made for the audience, and productions made to challenge the audience.
