Det første skritt mot medborgerskap? Moderskap og kvinnelig medborgerskap i Hanna Winsnes’ Det første Skridt.

Abstract

Denne masteroppgaven tar for seg hvordan Hanna Winsnes (1789-1872) skriver fram moderskap som et særegent kvinnelig samfunnsbidrag i Det første Skridt. Den oppofrende, omsorgsfulle og litt strenge moren, som gjerne også har et samfunnsoppdrag som lærerinne eller prestekone, er en gjentakende skikkelse i Winsnes’ tekster. Det gjelder også i Det første Skridt, der mødrenes barneoppdragelse er sentrale for hvordan neste generasjons medborgere blir. Problemstillingen som undersøkes i denne masteroppgaven er: Hvordan framstilles moderskap i relasjon til kvinnelig medborgerskap i Det første Skridt av Hanna Winsnes? I romanen er det fire mødre som forholder seg til moderskap på ulike måter. De ulike holdningene og forutsetningene kvinnene har gjør noe med romanens plassering av mødrene som medborgere, og derfor undersøkes følgende forskningsspørsmål i analysen: Hvilken betydning har fortellerteknikk for framstillingen av moderskap i Hanna Winsnes sin Det første Skridt? Hvilken betydning har etnisk bakgrunn og sosial klasse for framstillingen av moderskap? Hvilken betydelse får oppdragelse i romanen og hvordan kobles moderskap til medborgerskap i romanen? De teoretiske innfallsvinklene i masteroppgaven er medborgerskapsteori, feministisk teori om moderskap og narratologi. I tillegg vektlegges en historisk kontekstualisering av Hanna Winsnes liv og om omreisende gruppers samfunnsposisjon i Norge på 1800-tallet. Frode Ulvunds begrep om antiborgerskap, Ruth Listers forståelse av medborgerskap som praksis og Nira Yuval-Davis’ og Noor Jdids formulering om aktivt medborgerskap er viktig for begrepsliggjøring av tendensene som jeg har funnet i romanen. I tillegg baserer oppgaven seg på feministiske refleksjoner rundt moderskap av Simone de Beauvoir, Adrienne Rich og Ellen Key. Hvor sistnevntes teoretiske begrep om samfunnsmoderlighet er en sentral brikke i forståelsen av moderskapet i Det første Skridt. Innen det narratologiske feltet anvender oppgaven begreper utviklet av Gérard Genette, som Petter Aaslestad og Anders M. Gullestad bygger videre på. Resultatene som kommer frem i denne masteroppgaven er at Hanna Winsnes plasserte romanens fire mødrene i mer eller mindre i moralske og oppofrende moderskap i romanen. På den måten skrives det fram et budskap om hvilken tilnærmingsmåte til moderskapet som ansees som det moralsk mest høytstående i romanen. Jeg konkluderer med mødrene som besitter samfunnsmoderlige evner, som ikke nødvendigvis avhenger av et biologisk moderskap, er de som skrives fram med den mest dannede moralen for neste generasjon medborgere. Det er lærerinnen Elise og prestekonen Fredrikke som er de samfunnsbærende mødrene i romanen. På denne måten påpekte Winsnes hvordan det moralske og oppofrende moderskapet var et viktig samfunnsbidrag fra kvinnene til nasjonens anliggende.

This master thesis addresses how Hanna Winsnes (1789-1872) describes motherhood as a distinctive female contribution to society in Det første Skridt. The sacrificial, caring and slightly strict mother, who often also has a social mission as a teacher or priestess, is a recurring figure in Winsnes' texts. This also applies in Det første Skridt, where the mothers' child rearing is central to how the next generation of citizens becomes. The problem examined in this master's thesis is: How is motherhood portrayed in relation to female citizenship in Det første Skridt by Hanna Winsnes? In the novel, there are four mothers who relate to motherhood in different ways. The different attitudes and assumptions the women have do something about the novel's placement of the mothers as citizens, and therefore the following research questions are examined in the analysis: What is the significance of the narrative technique for the presentation of motherhood in Hanna Winsnes's Det første Skridt? What is the significance of ethnic background and social class for the presentation of motherhood? What is the meaning of upbringing in the novel and how does motherhood connect to citizenship in the novel? The theoretical approaches to the master's thesis are citizenship theory, feminist theory of motherhood and narratology. In addition, emphasis is placed on a historical contextualization of Hanna Winsne's life and the social position of itinerant groups in 19th century Norway. Frode Ulvund's concept of anti-citizenship, Ruth Lister's understanding of citizenship as a practice and Nira Yuval-Davis' and Noor Jdid's formulation of active citizenship are important for conceptualizing the tendencies that I have found in the novel. In addition, the thesis is based on feminist reflections on motherhood by Simone de Beauvoir, Adrienne Rich, and Ellen Key. Where the latter's theoretical concept of societal maturity is a central element in the understanding of motherhood in Det Første Skridt. Within the narratological field, the thesis uses concepts developed by Gérard Genette, on which Petter Aaslestad and Anders M. Gullestad further develops. The results of this master's thesis are that Hanna Winsnes placed the novel's four mothers in different morally and sacrificial motherhoods in the novel. In this way, a message is written on which approach to motherhood that is considered the morally most high-ranking in the novel. I conclude that the mothers who possess societal abilities, which do not necessarily depend on biological motherhood, are those who are written forward with the most formed morality for the next generation of fellow citizens. It is the teacher Elise and the priest's wife Fredrikke who are the socially bearing mothers in the novel. In this way, Winsnes pointed out how moral and sacrificial motherhood was an important contribution of society from women to the nation's affairs.
