With the emergence of Virtual Reality (VR) and recent advancements on both the hardware and software side, VR is now available to the masses and a plethora of new experiences can be made and explored by people and researchers. In this thesis, we have created a VR orchestral concert experience in collaboration with Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra. Additionally, we have explored how 3D audio works in the context of VR, and we have provided a novel method for creating 3D audio for a VR orchestral concert experience, by using a recording of the orchestra performing Tchaikovsky’s SymphonyNo. 5, where we had individual audio tracks from each of the orchestra’s different instrument groups. With the game engine Unity, and a spatializationSoftware Development Kit (SDK) from Oculus, we created the 3D audio from the recording of the orchestral concert. The concert was also recorded with a spherical 360°camera, placed directly in front of the conductor. Allowing the user to experience the concert from a unique perspective, which is not normally possible. The results from our user testing show us that the VR experience we have created, proved to be quite immersive, and the users noted that they could perceive the 3D audio. This, in turn, adds validity to our method for creating the 3D audio in our VR experience.
