Mellom miljøhumaniora og postkolonialisme - En religionsvitenskapelig narrativ- og resepsjonsanalyse av meningskonstruksjon og urfolksdiskursen i Avatar-franchisen

Abstract

Denne oppgaven undersøker divergerende meninger om Avatar-franchisens fremstilling av naturspiritualitet og urfolkskultur, sett i lys av miljøhumaniora og postkolonialistiske perspektiver. Gjennom en analyse av Bron Taylors konsept om "mørkegrønn religion" og kritiske postkolonialistiske akademiske posisjoner fremhever jeg hvordan filmen både kan inspirere til økologisk bevissthet og kritiseres for å opprettholde kolonialistiske narrativer. Jeg argumenter for at disse to akademiske posisjonene springer ut ifra ulike fortolkningsfellesskap, som resulterer i ulike meningskonstruksjoner av Avatar-franchisen. Oppgaven viser hvordan disse tolkningsrammene skaper ulike forståelser av filmenes tematikk og budskap og hvordan franchisen har konsekvenser for forståelsen av urfolk i det virkelige liv.

The Avatar franchise offers rich and diverse source material, making it an ideal subject for academic analysis. My thesis demonstrates that the films have been understood in diverse ways within various academic positions. This thesis examines differing opinions on the Avatar franchise's portrayal of nature spirituality and indigenous culture from the perspectives of environmental humanities and postcolonial studies. Through an analysis of Bron Taylor's concept of "dark green religion" and critical postcolonial positions, I highlight how the film can both inspire ecological consciousness and be criticized for perpetuating colonialist narratives. I argue that these two academic positions represent distinct interpretive communities, leading to two different constructions of meaning for the Avatar franchise. These different interpretive communities create varied understandings of the films' meanings and have real consequences for the representations of indigenous peoples in the media, as well as in academia. This way, the meaning construction of the Avatar franchise also shows how indigenous populations are understood through different academic positions.
