«Du forstår ikke no du heller, veit du det?»: Klasse- og minoritetserfaringar i Zeshan Shakars forfattarskap.

Abstract

Denne masteroppgåva omhandlar Zeshan Shakars tre romanar Tante Ulrikkes vei (2017), Gul bok (2020) og De kaller meg ulven (2022). Med utgangspunkt i problemstillinga «På kva måtar framstiller og uttrykker romanane til Zeshan Shakar klasse- og minoritetserfaringar?» har eg undersøkt Shakars forfattarskap. Korleis ulike utgangspunkt når det kjem til klasse og etnisitet har ringverknadar for livsmoglegskapar og livsutfaldingar, er eit sentralt forskingsspørsmål i denne oppgåva. For å svare, stiller eg konkrete spørsmål undervegs knytt til språk, økonomisk utgangspunkt og minoritetserfaringa og ser på korleis desse temaa gjer seg synlege i den enkelte roman.

Det teoretiske grunnlaget baserer seg på både postkolonial og klasseorientert teori. Eg har nytta omgrep frå Edward Said, Sara Ahmed, Maïmouna Jagne-Soreau og Daphne Arbouz operativt i møte med Shakars romanunivers for å sjå korleis opplevingar av rasialisering, stoppemekanismar og mellomforskap materialiserer seg i røyndomsnær skjønnlitteratur. Ved hjelp av Pierre Bourdieus sosiologiske klasseteori har eg sett på korleis desse romanuniversa skildrar reelle, levde forhold i eit samfunn. Mine lesingar av Zeshan Shakars romanar viser korleis skjønnlitteratur som er lagt tett opp til røyndomen kan seie noko om det samfunnet vi lev i. Romanane uttrykker klasse- og minoritetserfaringar gjennom komplekse framstillingar av økonomiske klassar, stoppemekanismar og mellomforskap. Slik blir denne masteroppgåva eit bidrag som viser korleis samtidslitteratur kan studerast i litteraturvitskapeleg ånd. Med personlege og røyndomstette forteljingar skildrar Zeshan Shakar liv som elles har vore underrepresentert i norsk litteratur, samstundes som romanane skapar rom for einkvan av sine lesarar slik at dei òg kan kjenne seg att i det litterære universet.

Class and minority are prominent themes explored in Zeshan Shakar’s bibliography, posing the question of how they may affect opportunities and outcomes in life. Looking at experiences depicted in Tante Ulrikkes Vei (2017), Gul Bok (2020) and De kaller meg ulven (2022), the research presented in this thesis aims to dissect in which ways the novels represent and express such concepts. The research question is formulated accordingly «In what ways do Zeshan Shakar’s novels represent and express class and minority experiences?». Posing specific questions tailored to each novel in Shakar’s authorship, the thesis attempts to explore the presentation of language, economic starting points and the minority experience, looking at how these themes are presented in each individual novel.

The theoretical approach is grounded in both post-colonial and class-oriented theory, based on work/principles as presented by Edward Said, Sara Ahmed, Maïmouna Jagne-Soreau and Daphne Arbouz. The theories are operatively applied in discussing Shakar’s universe, to assess how experiences of racialization, mechanisms of “stopping” and in-betweenship materialize in realistic fiction. Applying Pierre Bourdieu’s sociological class theory, the thesis analyses how the novels depict real and lived relations in todays’ society. My reading of Shakar’s novels depicts what fiction with proximity to reality may reveal about society. The novels express class and minority experiences through complex depictions of economic classes, mechanisms of “stopping” and in-betweenship. In this way, the dissertation becomes a contribution that demonstrates how contemporary literature may be studied in a literary-specific manner. With personal and realistic narratives, Shakar depicts lives otherwise underrepresented in Norwegian literature, while creating space for its readers to feel a sense of belonging in this literary universe.
