The master thesis presents a close reading of a Swedish and a Norwegian contemporary novel, which both explore different kinds of loss. "Happy Sally" (2004) by Sara Stridsberg and "Siss og Unn" (2008) by Inger Bråtveit depict how an experience creates repercussions for those affected. The fragmented and reticent narrative voice in these novels leads me to the question of why Bråtveit and Stridsberg chose to write them in this manner. The novels depict an essential sadness and have a melancholy tone. I therefore chose to turn to trauma theory as a tool in examining how Strindberg's and Bråtveit's narrative strategies invite to a reading using trauma theory. Trauma theory is concerned with how an individual is affected by and copes with a traumatic experience, and trauma narratives are fictional stories that help the reader access traumatic narratives. In extension to trauma theory, I have examined if the novels' melancholic tone can be related to the experience of loss. The analysis has proven that the novels share a number of common features with traditional trauma narratives. Primarily, this entails the depiction of the characters' inability to articulate their experiences. Moreover, the novels depict how a traumatic experience can influence later events and behavioral patterns, and they also highlight how past experiences return in the shape of recurrent flashbacks or dreams. At the same time, however, the novels are not traditional trauma narratives in the sense that the depictions of the characters' experiences do not deal with collective abuse or existential experiences. Still, the manner in which the novels depict the consequences of experiences of loss for the reader highlights the relevance of a reading using trauma theory. Finally, the analysis highlights the need for different theoretical approaches in understanding the complexity of trauma.en_US
