Den gode og vonde ensomheten. En studie av kreativ bearbeidelse hos Astrid Lindgren og Virginia Woolf

Abstract

Både Virginia Woolf (1882-1941) og Astrid Lindgren (1907-2002) har flere fellestrekk, deriblant ensomhetstemaet, som jeg skal studere i denne oppgaven. For de fleste er ikke Woolfs skildring av ensomheten noe nytt, men den dystre og melankolske undertonen i Lindgrens litteratur har blitt studert i liten grad. I undersøkelsen av ensomhetstemaet har jeg valgt å ta utgangspunkt i noen av deres mest kjente verk, altså Woolfs To the Lighthouse (1927) og Lindgrens Pippi Långstrump (1945), Pippi Långstrump går ombord (1946) og Pippi Långstrump i Söderhavet (1948). Gjennom en nærlesning og komparativ analyse av disse verkene vil jeg forsøke å vise hvordan både Woolf og Lindgren skildrer ensomhetstemaet som noe dobbelt, som noe melankolsk, men fritt. De to karakterene jeg tar utgangspunkt i, Lily Briscoe og Pippi, er begge preget av en dobbelthet, både i ytre handling og i indre sjeleliv. Denne dobbeltheten kan vitne om en utilpasshet og en søken/jakt etter en udefinert rolle, som igjen kan tyde på et eksistensielt ensomt subjekt. Men begge de to karakterene jeg undersøker omfavner denne ensomheten og klarer å snu den til det positive ved hjelp av en kreativ prosess. Til tross for slående likheter har det aldri før blitt foretatt en analyse av de to verkene eller de to forfatterne, og jeg håper at jeg i denne oppgaven kan vise hvordan samme tema og samme følelse kan bli skildret så likt for så ulike lesere.

Virginia Woolf (1882-1941) and Astrid Lindgren (1907-2002) have several features in common, one of which is the theme of loneliness, which I explore in this masterthesis. While Woolf's depiction of the loneliness theme is well known for most readers, the gloomy and melancholic undertone that can be found in Lindgren's works has so far not been investigated in much depth. In order to explore the loneliness theme in this context, I have chosen to look at two of the authors' most prominent works, namely Woolf's To the Lighthouse (1927) and Lindgren's Pippi Långstrump (1945), Pippi Långstrump går ombord (1946 Pippi Långstrump i Söderhavet (1948). Through close readings and comparative analysis I attempt to uncover the ways in which both Woolf and Lindgren depict the theme of loneliness as somewhat dual, somewhat melancholic, but also liberating. The two characters that I study closely, Lily Briscoe and Pippi, are both affected by an ambivalence which has considerable impact on both their external actions and their internal life of the mind. This duality exposes a certain uneasiness and a search for an undefined role, which in turn manifests itself as an existential loneliness. However, both characters embrace this loneliness and are able to transform it into something positive with the help of a creative process. Despite obvious similarities, no previous comparative analysis has been conducted on these two literary works, nor have these two authors been compared to one another. Thus, it is my hope that the present work is able to convey how the same themes and the same emotions can be portrayed in similar ways to two vastly different readerships.
