Abstract
Patients with dental anxiety and phobia have an unrealistic view of the outcome of dental treatment that includes negative cognitions concerning physical, psychological and social harm (Austin & Richards, 2001; Zvolensky & Schmidt, 2007). The phobia and anxiety are maintained due to a vicious circle as a result of these cognitions or catastrophic beliefs (Berggren, 1984; de Jongh et al., 2011). When a dental phobic patient is met with the feared situation, he will experience a fear reaction with physiological signs. In this project, 96 journals of patients between the age of 10 to 16 years old at the Center for Odontophobia in Bergen have been reviewed. The study focuses on the catastrophic beliefs, other negative thoughts without a catastrophic character, physiological symptoms of the anxiety, behaviours among patients when met with the feared situation and aetiologies behind their anxiety and phobia.
