Abstract
The relational context has proven to be the most important factor for positive change in therapy. That does not exclude more specific factors from being of significant value for therapy outcome. Studies of comparison indicate that different therapies on average result in similar effects. The comparisons have not allowed for individuals to respond in different ways to different interventions. Evidence supported research has examined the effect of specific techniques upon specific diagnoses. In many cases diagnoses will not be a sufficient indicator for choice of therapy. Other patient characteristics have proven to be more appropriate for this purpose. In this thesis several patient variables which show differential effects have been selected. Patient variables that have been explored are: Functional impairment, the personality dimension anaclitic- introjective, coping style (externalizing/ internalizing), resistance, and subjective distress. Research concludes that these patient characteristics can, and should, be matches to different therapies and interventions.
