«Men jeg er ikke noen slange, sier jeg! Jeg er en- jeg er en---»: En utforskning av Alices identitetsproblematikk i møte med Wonderlands snakkende dyr, via Jacques Derridas dyrefilosofi og en diskusjon av grensene for det menneskelige.

Abstract

Hvem, og hva, er jeg? Dette er grunnspørsmålene Alice stiller seg selv etter hun faller gjennom kaninhullet og ender opp i Wonderland. Disse spørsmålene opptrer både som indre spørsmål og utfordringer fra de forskjellige skapningene hun møter. Denne oppgaven tar for seg spørsmålet om Alices identitet, i Lewis Carrolls Alice-bøker, og prøver å finne ut av hvordan Alice har det når hun blir møtt med disse spørsmålene fra de snakkende dyrene. Etter å ha blitt inspirert av Jacques Derrida og hans «The Animal That Therefore I am», begir oppgaven seg ut på en ferd gjennom Wonderland og prøver å finne ut hvorfor Alice er usikker på sin egen identitet og rolle i verden. Hypotesen oppgaven arbeider ut i fra er at spørsmålene om hennes forståelse av seg selv kommer fra at dyrene har språk. Det blir også diskutert hvorvidt det kun kommer fra språket hos dyret, eller om det også kobles til hvordan dyrene bruker språket, og hvordan de utfordrer og utspør Alice. Denne oppgaven fokuserer både på «Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland» og «Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There», og de dyrene og utfordringene Alice møter i begge disse drømmene. Dette inkluderer, men er ikke begrenset til, hvem og hva nøyaktig Alice er, og om hun eksisterer i det hele tatt. Med hjelp av Derrida, Martin Heidegger og Giorgio Agamben går oppgaven inn på feltet animal studies. Videre diskuterer oppgaven Derridas kommentarer om hva som er ’proper to man’, og hvordan dyrene i Wonderland konsekvent utfordrer ideen om hva dyr kan gjøre, og hvordan dette igjen påvirker Alices forståelse av seg selv og verden. Alices ipseity blir også utfordret i Wonderland, sammen med hennes autoreferensialitet, og hun har ikke lenger kontrollen hun er vant med å ha. Denne oppgaven trekker linjer fra kontroll til makt og hvordan dyrene i Wonderland har makten som vanligvis tilhører menneskene. Oppgaven stiller også spørsmål til spillene som blir spilt i Wonderland, hva det vil si at de kan sies å være ideelle spill, i Deleusiansk forstand, og hvordan det påvirker Alice å ikke kjenne reglene. Avslutningsvis kommer oppgaven inn på spørsmålene om hvorvidt dyret kan sies å dø, noe Heidegger fokuserer på. Oppgaven undersøker hvordan det virker som dyrene i Wonderland har evnen til å dø i Heideggersk forstand, og dermed innehar alle de menneskelige egenskapene.

Who, and what, am I? These are the key questions that Alice asks after she falls through the rabbit hole and enters Wonderland. These questions occur both as inner monologues and as challenges from some of the array of creatures she meets along the way. In this thesis, I tackle the question of Alice’s identity, in Lewis Carroll’s Alice-books, and try to discover how Alice feels being brought face to face with these question by the speaking animals. Taking inspiration from Derrida and his «The Animal That Therefore I am», I too, wander through Wonderland and try to figure out why Alice feels unsure about her own identity and her role in the world. I hypothesize that her questions about herself and her world-view stem from the animal having language. I also question whether it is simply the language that affects Alice, or if it also connected to how the language is used, and how Alice is questioned and challenged in different ways by the creatures she meets. This thesis focuses on both «Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland» and «Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There», and the challenges and creatures Alice meets in both dreams. This includes, but is not limited to, who and what exactly Alice is, and if she even exists at all. With the help of Derrida, Martin Heidegger and Giorgio Agamben I navigate the world of animal studies. Furthermore, I discuss Derrida’s comments on what is proper to man, the properties of man, and how the animals in Wonderland consistently challenge the idea of what animals can and cannot do, what is distinctly human and how this can affect how Alice feels about herself and the world. Alice’s ipseity is also challenged while in Wonderland, as is her autoreferentiality, and she no longer has the control she desires. I draw lines from control to power and discover how the animals in Wonderland have the power that is usually reserved for humans. Penultimately, I ask questions about the games that are played in Wonderland, what it entails that they can be said to be ideal games in the Deleuzian sense, and how it affects Alice’s identity not knowing the rules. Lastly, this thesis touches on the question of death in Wonderland, and how the animals seem to have the ability to die, thus embodying the last exclusively human ability.
