This master thesis examines the history of the only barony that was located in Norway after absolutism was introduced in Denmark – Norway around 1660: Baroniet Rosendal or the barony of Rosendal. With the introduction of the absolute monarchy, the royal power created a new type of higher, titled nobility in 1671, which would be given privileges and status that surpassed the old nobility. The newly titled nobility of counts and barons got special privilegies that also gave them the right to create their own countships and baronies. The aim of this study is to examine a perspective of theory versus practice, which attempts to explain what the absolute king's plan was with the barons and their baronies, and how this in reality was carried out at Baroniet Rosendal in the period up to 1749. This study is therefore twofold: Part 1 explores what the absolute king’s intention was with the barons in various areas of society, and how they would fit in this new form of government. Here is the barons special privileges an important source. This is the main focus of Chapter 2, which forms the basis for the next chapters of this study. Part 2 therefore focuses on how this became applicable to Baroniet Rosendal. This is explored in Chapter 3, which examines the barony as a status symbol, and the social status of the owners. Chapter 4 focuses on the adaptation of the more administrative privileges to Baroniet Rosendal, and how it became a local administration in Norway. To explore the research questions, this master thesis goes through the barons' given social tasks that were linked to the civil, clerical, judicial and military areas of society, and in addition how the social status they were given and the display thereof could be used politically as a way to represent and legitimize the new absolute monarchy and the royal power.en_US
