This masterthesis is about modernization of names in Jølster and Gloppen countys in Sogn og Fjordane in Norway, between the years 1800 - 1900. Primary material has been the cecuses in 1801, 1865 and 1900. My main hypothesis is that there will be found obvious signs of modernization. Traditional namingprocess has been characterized by naming children after grandparents, but slowly, this tradition looses its grip and new names come into use. Many of the new available names are names following European trends, and they arrive in the rural communities through the nearby cities and larger places like Bergen and Førde. There will probably be an increase of female names that has been adapted from male names with additional endings, like -ina/-ine. We will also most likely see signs of a new wave of old Norwegian names in the total range of names at the end of the 19th century. There is also a selection of highly unusual names in Jøster that seems not to be found in the surrounging areas, meaning that though being influenced by time nad changes, there seems to be a tendency to hold on to the use of local names.en_US
