Schizofrenibegrepet: Historisk gjennomgang og kritikk

Abstract

The concept of schizophrenia has been a central part of the psychiatric literature for about 100 years now. The concept is often taken for granted by both mental health professionals and the general population, and is well incorporated in psychiatric and every day language. In this thesis I will examine the development of the concept of schizophrenia throughout the twentieth century and today, and I will show that the concept has varied much over the years. I will review central critiques that are presented with regard to schizophrenia, and focus on four main approaches: Criticism with respect to the notion of mental illness, criticism coming from the anti-psychiatry movement, criticism of the concept’s scientific foundation, and a presentation of the relevance of Foucault’s work for the concept of schizophrenia. The thesis shows that schizophrenia is a variable and controversial concept. The psychiatric profession still uses it, despite heavy criticism and disappointing research findings.

Schizofrenibegrepet har vært en sentral del av den psykiatriske litteraturen i rundt 100 år. Begrepet blir ofte tatt for gitt av både psykiatriske fagfolk og den generelle befolkningen, og er godt innarbeidet i både fagspråk og hverdagsspråk. I denne oppgaven vil jeg undersøke utviklingen av schizofrenibegrepet gjennom det tyvende århundret og frem til i dag, og jeg vil vise at begrepet har variert mye gjennom årene. Jeg vil gå gjennom sentral kritikk som er lagt frem i henhold til schizofreni, og vil her fokusere på fire hovedsaklige tilnærminger: Kritikk i henhold til forestillingen om psykisk sykdom, kritikk som kommer fra antipsykiatribevegelsen, kritikk av begrepets vitenskapelige grunnlag, samt en presentasjon av hvilken relevans Foucaults arbeid har for schizofrenibegrepet. Oppgaven viser at schizofreni er et veldig variabelt og kontroversielt begrep. Den psykiatriske profesjonen bruker det fremdeles; til tross for sterk kritikk og skuffende forskningsfunn.
