Abstract
Over the course of the last few years, the term mentalization has had an increasing influence on psychological theory and treatment. In this paper, the concept of mentalization is explained and relevant theory and research concerning mentalization, reflective functioning, neuropsychology, and attachment is addressed. The purpose of this paper was to identify and describe mentalization-based intervention programs for families and to clarify the research foundation for these programs. Two electronic searches were carried out. The first search identified 5 different mentalization-based intervention programs for families. The second search identified existing research related to these intervention programs. This paper also includes a discussion of whether mentalization-based intervention programs for families represent an important contribution to family-based treatment. It is concluded that mentalization-based intervention programs for families incorporate important theory regarding the caregiver - child relationship, but that the empirical foundation for the mentalization-based treatment of families is limited and that this is obviously still a young field. Despite the fact that several studies showed promising results, mentalization-based programs for families still need a wider research base in order to be classified as evidence-based treatment interventions.
 
Mentaliseringsbegrepet har i de senere år fått en økende betydning for psykologisk teoretisering og behandling. I denne oppgaven blir det redegjort for mentaliseringsbegrepet, samt teorier og forskning rundt mentalisering, reflekterende fungering, nevropsykologi og tilknytning. Formålet med oppgaven var å identifisere og beskrive mentaliseringsbaserte intervensjonsprogrammer for familier, samt kartlegge disse programmenes forskningsgrunnlag. Med dette som utgangspunkt ble det gjennomført 2 elektroniske søk. I det første søket ble det identifisert 5 ulike mentaliseringsbaserte intervensjonsprogrammer for familier. Det andre søket identifiserte forskning knyttet til de ulike intervensjonsprogrammene. I oppgaven diskuteres det hvorvidt mentaliseringsbaserte intervensjonsprogrammer for familier kan betegnes som et viktig bidrag til familiebaserte intervensjoner. Det konkluderes med at mentaliseringsbaserte intervensjonsprogrammer for familier tar tak i viktige teoretiseringer rundt relasjonen mellom barn og omsorgsgiver, men spesielt forskningsgrunnlaget for mentaliseringsbasert behandling av familier bærer fremdeles preg av at dette er et svært ungt felt. Til tross for at flere studier viste lovende resultater, ser mentaliseringsbaserte programmer for familier likevel ut til å trenge et bredere forskningsgrunnlag for å kunne klassifiseres som evidensbaserte behandlingsintervensjoner.
