Where was Providence? Religiøs tvil i Thomas Hardys Tess of the D'Urbervilles

Abstract

Denne masteroppgaven tar for seg tematikken rundt religiøs tvil i Thomas Hardys roman, Tess of the D'Urbervilles. Gjennom en nærstudie av romanens hovedperson, Tess, sin ferd gjennom narrativet, vil jeg peke på hennes trosmessige utvikling - hvordan den viser deg i teksten, hva som spiller inn på den og hva den kan si om samfunnets forhold til institusjonalisert religion. Som inngangsport til undersøkelsen vil jeg basere meg på Miltons begreper om uskyld og erfaring, slik de foreligger i hans langdikt Paradise Lost, for å vise hvordan Tess, som en fallen kvinne, går fra en tilstand av uskyldig uvitenhet til en tilstand av erfaring og viten. Effektene dette utvidede synspunktet har på hennes blikk på samfunnet som dømmer henne for hennes overskridelse, og videre på samfunnets bruk av kristendommen som absolutt moralsk rettesnor, vil bli lagt frem og diskutert i denne analysen.

This thesis i a study that discusses the theme of religious doubt in Thomas Hardy's novel, Tess of the D'Urbervilles. By means of a close reading of the novel's protagonist, Tess, I indend to provide a closer look at her religious development - how it exposes itself in the text, which factors determine it, and what it might tell us about institutionalized religion and the contemporary society in general. In doing this, I will ground Tess's development in the Miltonic terms of innocence and experience, by seeing how she, as a fallen woman, passes from a state of innocent ignorance to a state of experience and knowledge. The effects which this extended perspective has on her view of the society that judges her for her unvoluntary transgression, and furthermore on society's appropriation of Christianity as an absolute moral guideline, will be presented and discussed in this analysis.
