« Og alt som kjem ut av det er forhåpentlegvis positivt» Ein kvalitativ studie av ungdom og unge vaksne sine erfaringar i interreligiøs dialog

Abstract

Temaet for denne masteroppgåva er bruken av organisert interreligiøs dialog blant ungdom og unge vaksne. Prosjektet er basert på kvalitative intervju med åtte unge menneske frå ulike religion- og livssynssamfunn, og har fokus på deira opplevingar gjennom deltaking i interreligiøs dialog i Oslo. Oppgåva er tredelt. Første del forsøker å forstå kva som motiverer desse unge menneska til å delta i dialog. Del 2 ser på kva erfaringar dei har gjort seg gjennom deltakinga, medan del 3 tek føre seg utfordringane deltakarane opplever i dialogen. Materialet mitt viser fem ulike grunnar for kvifor informantane deltek: Ganske tilfeldig, for å verte forståtte, å knyte kontaktar, respons på terror, idealisme. Mange informantar bruker også interreligiøs dialog som ein respons på kjensla av å vere religiøs i eit sekulært samfunn. Dette har vorte kopla opp mot Erving Goffman sin teori om stigma. Informantane opplever at openheit mot andre og deira religiøse og livssynsmessige bakgrunn er ein føresetnad for interreligiøs deltaking. Dette inneber i følgje informantane at dialog ikkje vil appellere til alle. Ein måte å inkludere fleire på, vil vere å introdusere interreligiøs dialog i skulen. Dialogen opplevast også som å kunne gjere deltakarane meir sikre i si eiga tru, i tillegg til at ein lærer om andre sine religionar og livssyn, noko som kan hindre fordommar. Utfordringane dei opplever er både knytt til praktiske utfordringar med å arrangere dialogmøta, representering, og å snakke om tema som vert oppfatta som vanskelege. Særleg Midtausten-konflikten vert opplevd som eit vanskeleg tema.

The topic for this master's thesis is the use of organized interreligious dialogue among youths and young adults. The study is based on qualitative interviews with eight young people from different religious and philosophical associations, focusing on their experiences from participating in organised interreligious dialogue in Oslo, Norway. This thesis is tripartite: 1) it seeks to understand what motivates these young people to participate in the dialogue, 2) it wants to look into the participants' experiences from participating, 3) and it seeks to explore the challenges they experience with interreligious dialogue. My material reveals five different reasons why people participate: Participation by chance, to be understood, to make contacts, as a terror-response, and as idealism. Many informants also use inter- religious dialogue as a response on a feeling of being stigmatised as religious in a secular society. This has been connected to Goffman's theory of the stigmatised. The informants experience that openness towards others and their religious and philosophical associations is a condition for inter- religious participation. But this means, according to my informants, that the dialogue won't appeal to everyone. Introducing inter- religious dialogue in the schools will be a way to include youths who are not seen as open. The participants also experience that inter-religious dialogue can make oneself more secure in one owns faith. A goal in the dialogue is not to agree, but to learn more about each other and the different religions and philosophies. This has made many of the informants more aware of the existing variety both transversely and inwards in the various religions and philosophies. The challenges they experience is both connected to more practical issues concerning carrying out the dialogue-meetings, representation (representing oneself or the religion one belongs to), and talking about issues which are experienced as difficult or complicated. Particularly is the conflict in the Middle East experienced as a difficult topic.
