Abstract
Pompeii offers archaeologist that are interested in classical archaeology something unique No other ruin is as well maintained or complete as this city and it thus offers an invaluable insight into the Roman society. This dissertation will analyse freedmen and their tombs in an effort to compare them to the tombs of the aristocracy. Contrary to most studies done regarding Pompeii this dissertation will have an analytic perspective in favour of a statistical perspective. By utilizing an analytic approach this thesis seeks to answer whether or not freedmen emulate the tombs of the aristocrats and why. The main goal of the dissertation will be to analyse how freedmen both express and strengthen their status through monumental tombs. The supplementary goal will be to analyse how the tombs of the freedmen relate to the tomb of the aristocracy, discuss whether or not the freedmen emulate aristocratic tombs, and if so, what where their intentions behind this emulation.
