Abstract

In this thesis, I examine how students at a bachelor level in Nordic languages and literature, students from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences and readers without any academic education after high school consider the readability of sentences initiated by complex conditional or causal clauses. I found that the participants considered sentences initiated by complex causal clauses as more difficult than sentences initiated by conditional clauses. I also found that the participants without any academic education after high school, considered all sentences to be more difficult than the two student groups, regardless of what kind of adverbial clause. I also found that this group is focusing more on syntax when considering readability than the two other groups.
