Larmen og lengselen: En analyse av The Sound and the Fury

Abstract

Denne oppgaven handler om William Faulkners The Sound and the Fury (1929), og da særlig om hvordan romanens tre brødre forsøker å fylle det emosjonelle fraværet som deres søster etterlater. Den psykisk utviklingshemmede Benjy tenker gjennom romanens første dato. Han taler med begrensninger i sine verbale ressurser, og gir uttrykk for sine behov gjennom ordløse og intuitive lyder. Hans indre liv orienterer seg rundt minner om søsteren Caddy, og gjenlever hennes omsorg gjennom assosiasjoner og sanselige erstatninger. Idealisten Quentin møter oss på andre dato, atten år tidligere, på dagen for sin drukningsdød. Abstrakt og løsrevet, tordnende og fortvilt – hans indre er uforsonlig med søsterens affærer med andre menn. Han har skapt en oase av kjærlighet med Caddy, som ikke kan utleves i virkeligheten, og i den møter han sin fata-le skjebne. Den tredje brorens tankeliv, atten år senere, er rettet mot det som kan vinnes i den ytre verden. This paper seeks to explore how the three brothers of William Faulkner’s The Sound and the Fury (1929) try to fill the loss and the emotional gap that their sister leaves behind. The mentally impaired Benjy reveals his inner life in the novel’s first chapter. His verbal resources are limited and he can only express his needs through the use of wordless and intuitive sounds. His inner life is oriented around the memories of Caddy, and he relives her love and care through the use of associations and sensoric replacements. Quentin, the idealist, speaks to us on the second date of the novel, eighteen years prior, on the very day of his suicide. In an abstract and disoriented, thunderous and tortured, rhetoric, he makes his display of his distaste for his sister’s romantic affairs. He has created a haven of love with Caddy that cannot be realized in the circumstance of life, and which finally leads him to his death by drowning. The consciousness of the third brother, Jason, back in the present, orients itself around wealth and material rewards. He uses Caddy as a source of income by stealing her daughter’s, Quentin Jr.’s, monthly payments from her. An omniscient orator gives us the conclusion to the story, figuring Dilsey the maid, that enriches the novel with her humanity in the midst of the egoism and decay of this aristocratic southern family. A rich array of characters and themes composes this idiosyncratic novel by Faulkner. The novel’s lack of coherence, its stylistic and temporal fragmentation, has been broadly dis-cussed by critics. This paper seeks to explore the absence in its center, the area of life that needs and wishes and longs for fulfillment. The novel has yet to become complete through the act of reading and rereading. Each of the characters moves towards the presence of love and inner peace in ways that are specific to them. Through the lens of a hermeneutic-pragmatic literary theoretic position this analysis will seek to read the streams of consciousness of the characters in search of their responses to the gap that Caddy left them. Memory and the flux of time plays a large role in the individual consciousness. The writer’s hope for the paper’s progress is to enlighten the zone of incompletion and the hope for betterment that transcends both time and place.
