Abstract

Appreciating the performances of the Afro-Cuban folklore ensemble Ashé-Iyá, one might ask whether it is religion or not that is being witnessed, and how this might be perceived by the artists themselves, as well as by their audiences. What, if anything, separates, in this case, Santería from music and dance performances? By picking perspectives from performance theories, and applying them on rich fieldwork data, this article set out to examine such questions.
