Abstract

This thesis is focusing on agritourism and its impact on regional development and identity in Ryfylke, a region in Rogaland County. The use of tourism in today's competitive agricultural life has become a survival strategy for small farms in rural areas. Agritourism is seen as an alternative direction in the ongoing reorganization of agriculture in Norway. A trend has occurred towards revitalization, romanticizing and commercialization of farming culture. We can see that the farm will play a new part in the community than previously. The thesis has concentrated on two farms that are engaged in agritourism in the region. Qualitative oriented methods have been used to elaborate the topic. Agritourism is set in a regional perspective considering how the farm becomes a part of a greater regional location buildup process in which regional characteristics are emphasized to communicate an attractive community. Other issues have been regarding how agritourism, and its connection to the cultural landscape, is a representative of community values.
