La comunidad palestina en Santiago de Chile: Un estudio de la cultura, la identidad y la religión de los palestinos chilenos

Abstract

Esta investigación aborda el proceso de integración de la comunidad palestina cristiana en Santiago de Chile. A través de los datos recopilados en el campo puedo acercarme a este asunto de manera profesional lejos de todo prejuicio y generalización. Los informantes cuentan sus experiencias y reflexiones personales que forman la base de esta investigación. Es una historia de una inmigración, una cultura y una identidad palestina y los cambios producidos en la comunidad después de haber vivido varias generaciones en un ámbito muy extraño a aquello del país de origen. La problemática de la investigación se concentra en estudiar cómo se identifican los chilenos de origen palestino y ver qué función tiene la cultura de los ancestros en su vida actual, o sea, cuál es la relación con aquella cultura. Otra parte de la problemática se dedica a investigar el papel de la religión en el proceso de integración. Por supuesto, estos temas: la cultura, la identidad y la religión, son muy interdependientes y entremezclados, a pesar de esto yo hago un esfuerzo para enfocarme en cada uno tratándolo como un tema separado.

This thesis focuses on the process of integration of the Palestinian community in Santiago de Chile. It is a community that emerged following a long migratory tradition from the Palestinian territories to Chile, especially during the Ottoman rule and the British mandate there. After describing the history and the nature of this community, the research uses personal stories told by the participants in this study in order to reconstruct parts of the history of this community. In addition, the research investigates the present role of the Palestinian culture in the participants' lives through analyzing their attitudes with respect to different elements like Palestinian traditional food, the Arabic language, family structure and marriage. This study also focuses on the collective identity and the individual identity of the participants. Besides, it investigates as well what Chilean Palestinian means for each one of them. Religion as an important cultural component represents a focal point in this study. In this part, with special focus on the Orthodox faith, the participants define their relation to religion spiritually and culturally, and they explain whether or not it represents an important part of their identity. Furthermore, the research examines some cultural practices associated with the Orthodox faith and it establishes some differences on the social and spiritual level between the Catholic faith in Chile and the Oriental Orthodox faith. Moreover, this study explores how the Orthodox church of San Jorge is viewed among the participants, as well as, what they think of the religious conversion in their community from the Orthodox faith to the Catholic one.
