The rangers of the El Cajas National Park in Ecuador are a complex group of men with different backgrounds and interests. This thesis is a case study that aims to explore their identity as forest rangers. More specifically, it will explore the process of identity formation as a forest ranger, at the individual level and in group. It will look at how it is shaped and changed through time and experience. The thesis has, as a basis for the analysis, 5 qualitative semi-structured research interviews. The interviews are of the rangers who have different work experience at work, are of different ages and have different interests. This is done with the idea that the results can show the diversity in the group. The methods used in the fieldwork are participatory observation and research interviews conducted in the autumn of 2011 in the Cajas National Park, near Cuenca in Ecuador. Three central theories within the social sciences about identity form the theoretical part of the thesis The results of the analyses, in general, are that the identity process is quite large and complex. When the informants started as forest rangers, in some cases they had no idea what it meant to be a forest ranger. In other cases, they had a delusion. Through the experience they have gained, this has changed. The analysis has seen changes, signs of identity formation and processes in group identity, major changes in relation to understanding of their roles and in some cases, this has affected other parts of their lives.
