“Todo lo que has podido ofrecerme siempre ha sido una vida complicada” Un estudio de los migrantes noruegos que retornaron de Argentina en los años 1880-1940.

Abstract

Este trabajo de tesis se enfoca en los noruegos que migraron a Argentina en los años 1890-1940, y más específicamente en los migrantes que decidieron volver a Noruega. Un número considerable de los noruegos que migraron a América Latina en la época de migración en masas eligió a Argentina como destino. Hay indicaciones de que la migración noruega a Argentina antes de 1940 fue en total por lo menos de 4000 personas, y que aproximadamente la mitad de estos migrantes retornaron. Este estudio busca identificar cuál fue la motivación de los noruegos para viajar a Argentina, y cuáles fueron los factores decisivos de sus retornos. A la misma vez busca ver las experiencias de los noruegos a la vista de las teorías más centrales de migración de retorno prestadas de las ciencias sociales, con el fin de detectar cómo los migrantes encajan en estas teorías. ¿Fueron remigrantes típicos? La investigación hace un análisis de las historias migratorias de un total de 21 noruegos, utilizando en su mayor parte fuentes escritas por y sobre esas mismas personas. El análisis muestra que la mayoría de los noruegos que migraron a Argentina se fueron por razones económicas. Sin embargo, la esperanza de los noruegos de mejorar su condición económica en gran medida no se hizo realidad. Vemos también que los migrantes noruegos generalmente fallaron en desarrollar una buena red de contactos en Argentina, y que se mantenían distantes de los argentinos, los indígenas y los otros inmigrantes, y así consiguientemente de la Otredad.

This thesis focuses on the Norwegians who migrated to Argentina in the years 1890-1940, and more specifically on the migrants who decided to return to Norway. A considerable number of Norwegians who migrated to Latin America at the time of mass migration chose Argentina as their destination. There are indications that Norwegian migration to Argentina before 1940 totaled at least 4,000 people, and that approximately half of these migrants returned. This study seeks to identify what has been the Norwegians motivations to travel to Argentina, and what have been the decisive factors of their returns. At the same time, it seeks to see the experiences of the Norwegians in light of the most central theories of return migration lent from the social sciences, in order to detect how the migrants fits into these theories. Where they typical return migrants? The research analyzes the migration histories of a total of 21 Norwegians, using mostly sources written by and about these same persons. The analysis shows that the majority of the Norwegians who migrated to Argentina went largely for economic reasons. However, the Norwegians' hope of improving their economic condition was largely unrealized. We also see that the Norwegian migrants in this study generally failed to develop a good network of contacts in Argentina, and that they kept a distance from the Argentines, the indigenous people and other immigrants, and thus from the Otherness.
