On raising multilingual children: a study on parental language strategies and childhood multilingualism in Norway

Sammendrag
Denne oppgaven omfatter flerspråklighet hos barn og undersøker hvilke språkstrategier foreldre i flerspråklige familier i Norge anvender for å lære sine barn flere språk, i hovedsak Engelsk og Norsk. Hensikten med studien er å identifisere hvilke strategier som blir brukt, og vurdere om noen fremstår som mer effektive og suksessfull enn andre. De to hovedstrategiene oppgaven setter søkelys på er en forelder, ett språk (One Parent One Language, OPOL), og hjemmespråk (Home Language, HL). Åtte flerspråklige familier i Bergen deltok i prosjektet, totalt ti barn i alderen seks til ni år, og tolv foreldre. Metoden innebærer dybdeintervju med foreldrene, samt språktester på barna. Funnene viser et spektrum av språkstrategier anvendt, hvor noen konsekvent føler OPOL eller HL, mens en tredjedel anvender en blandet tilnærming hvor alle språkene i hjemmet benyttes av begge foreldrene (Mixed Language Policy, MLP). Språktestene viser i hovedsak ingen betydelige forskjeller i språkkompetanse mellom barna tilhørende OPOL og HL, men det er en klar sammenheng mellom foreldrenes evne til å konsekvent føle sin valgte strategi og høye språkferdigheter hos barna. This thesis focuses on childhood multilingualism and investigates which language strategies parents of multilingual children in Norway utilise. The study aims to identify which strategies are used, and if one is proven more effective and successful than others. The main strategies explored are one parent one language (OPOL) and the home language strategy (HL). Eight multilingual families in Bergen participated in the project, ten children aged six to nine years old, and twelve parents. The data collection was done through in-depth interviews with the parents, in addition to language tests conducted on the children. The findings reveal a spectrum of strategies utilised, with some adhering to OPOL and HL, whereas a third conform to a more fluid approach with both/all languages used interchangeably by both parents – mixed language policy (MLP). The language tests do not reveal a higher efficacy or success rate in either strategy, but there is clear ties between the parents ability to consistently adhere to their chosen strategy and high proficiency levels among the children.
