This thesis is focusing on the museum reform, and how processes in the regions and the places, has affected the centralization of the museums. Centralization and increased governance are current trends, and it has been a part of the museum’s everyday life since the reform was initiated for almost two decades ago. The goal of the museum reform was to consolidate the museums so that they could be a part of national networks. The reform was a structural reform that was supposed to increase the quality of the museums within the units. I have used qualitative methods to elaborate on why the place and the region has something to say on the outcome of the reform. Two consolidated museums have been investigated based on a theoretical framework that seeks to understand the purpose of a region based on the terms political/administrative, functional and identifying regions. The purpose of this has been to see why the consolidated units have evolved the way they have and what that means for the museums in the regions today.
