Abstract
Since the World War II, a popular press has increased in scope in Norway. Among the weekly and daily press, the magazine Se & hør and the newspaper VG are the leading representatives. Within the same period, the Norwegian gay community has "come out of the closet". Whereas they before were totally absent from the media, they are being regularly featured in contemporary (popular) media. This study explores how this gay community, more particular certain gay individuals, have been portrayed in Se & Hør and VG from the mid 1980s and until today. The thesis additionally contributes towards the research on Se & Hør's and VG's journalism and discusse which functions popular press can have in a modern democracy. At the same time, this study provides a small contribution towards understanding the gay movement from a media scientific point of view.
