The topic of this master's thesis is creative learning processes. Internationally and nationally, creativity is highlighted as an important competence, which the school must contribute to developing in the students. In that context, the teachers are considered to be key, and their competence is crucial for success. At the same time, teachers receive little support from the curriculum in how they can facilitate creative learning processes in their teaching.
Through qualitative interviews and observations with five primary school teachers, I have investigated the research question; How do primary school teachers understand and facilitate creative learning processes in their teaching? The study is based on a constructivist paradigm, which means that I have hermeneutically interpreted the informants' opinions and understandings of the research question. In addition, the data material is also understood from my perception of what happened in the observations. Creative learning processes is a term that links creativity and learning and is based on socio-cultural understandings of both learning and creativity. The theoretical framework is therefore taken from sociocultural theory, where perspectives from Bakhtin, dialogic pedagogy, Vygotsky and Dewey contribute to elucidate and understand the teachers' understanding and facilitation of creative learning processes.
Findings from the study show that the teachers understand creative learning processes as social and dialogic processes, where interaction and negotiation of opinions are central. Furthermore, creative learning processes are understood as an opportunity room for both knowledge construction and creativity. The teachers also understand the learning processes as exploratory and experience-based, where students must explore the subject matter and make their own experiences. When the teachers are to facilitate creative learning processes in their teaching, they emphasize facilitating cooperation between the students, so that they can give each other ideas, perspectives, and support. Furthermore, the teachers are concerned with opening the possibility space and keeping the outcome of the processes open. They are also concerned with giving students genuine participation and choices in the process, which they support.
