Abstract

The purpose of this cross-sectional study is to identify the pragmatic competence and general communication skills of children with cleft lip and/ or palate. The children (n = 17), aged 5: 2-6: 8 years, were examined using The Children`s Communication Checklist 2 (D. V. M. Bishop, 2003). They were compared with the checklist´s standardization group and tests of significance were used across three cleft types: cleft palate only (n = 7), cleft lip only (n = 2) and cleft lip and palate (n = 8). The children scored below average on the pragmatic scales (45.76) and adequate on the general communication composite (70.12). No significant differences between the cleft types were found. The general communication skills of the sample were within normal range, but they may have some challenges regarding pragmatics, particularly in adapting language to context. Keywords: Cleft lip and/ or palate, The Children`s Communication Checklist 2, Pragmatic competence, general communication skills.
