| en_US |
dc.description.abstract | Young adults (18-35 years) are a small and understudied group of cancer survivors. Research has revealed that this population has a greater risk of physical and psychosocial late effects than younger and older cancer survivors. Despite this, few studies have focused on young adult cancer survivors (YACS) experiences of follow-up care after cancer treatment. In this regard, the aim of this study was to investigate YACS experiences with the healthcare system’s follow-up care. The study is based on 4 semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 YACS over a period of six months. The data were analyzed using Systematic Text Condensation and NVivo 12. The analysis presented four main themes: «They should have prepared me better», «The GP does not understand my challenges», «The follow-up appointments focuses exclusively on cancer relapse» and «Who is responsible for my follow- up care?». The participants experienced a lack of preparation in the transition from cancer patient to cancer survivor, as well as a lack of understanding of their overall challenges from their GP and on their follow-up appointments at the hospital. Furthermore, they struggled with understanding who in the health care system that was responsible for their follow-up care. These results indicate deficiencies in the health care system's follow-up of YACS in terms of preparation for the survival phase, interdisciplinarity and knowledge of late effects, as well as organization of follow-up care within the healthcare system. A more holistic perspective in the health care system on follow-up care that addresses the many challenges YACS experiences is suggested. | en_US |
