Abstract

This study is about inclusion of hearing-impaired pupils in the mainstream schools. The purpose of the study is to highlight the factors that make hearing-impaired pupils feel included and give a sense of self-efficacy while attending a mainstream school. Interviews have been conducted with the hearing-impaired pupils under the law of education §3-9, who utilizes interpreters in class and attends a mainstream school with additional resources for the deaf and hard-of-hearing – or an affiliated school connected to a such a resource school. The message being conveyed by the participants in the study is that schools need for more insight and knowledge about hearing-impaired pupils, about their situation and the use of sign language in general. Through their stories, this master thesis can contribute to the understanding of how to make adaptions which will be a valuable step towards an improved inclusion of hearing-impaired pupils in mainstream schools and increase their inclusion and self-efficacy during the studies.
